perak adventure trip!
hey all!
here's a copy of the email i've sent out, fyi(:
Perak's this friday aren't you all excited :D be at FARRER PARK MRT (NE8) at 9PM BRING A PEN!
there have been a few concerns about the safety conditions of perak in light of the recent spate of accidents/floods in malaysia. i'll clarify them here so that your parents won't feel worried about it k!
1. Accidents
The accidents that have taken place in Malaysia are either in 1) mountainous regions and 2) much more challenging waters, both which we will not be venturing into.
2. Floods
If you've been following the news, Malaysia has been hit by heavy monsoon rains and as a result, many parts of east (Kelantan) and south (Johor) Malaysia are flooded. However, the floods will not affect us as, firstly, Perak is situated in West Malaysia and has a history clear of flash floods (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floods_in_malaysia) and secondly, we will not be passing through the flooded JB highway. Also, with regard to white water rafting, our river Sungai Kampar (level 1-2+) is the only river suitable for commercial rafting throughout the year. In the monsoon season, the higher waters will make the ride more exciting, yet it'll be equally safe.
In case of rain, alternative activities will be carried out/suitable modifications will be made to the activities. Pacwest has been a choice travel organisation of many schools and groups for the past many years - HCI itself has patronised this organisation many times so YUP! hope this will be able to assuage your parents' worries(: if they are still concerned, feel free to call pacwest (65361889 look for su) directly for professional advice.
also, a reiteration of the previous email:
misc:
a) sleeping bags are optional, but highly recommended. you can use them in the hut and on the bus, it'll be much more comfy :D
b) please label all your belongings if you don't want them to get lost!
c) try to bring longer shorts/berms (i.e. no fbts during actvities/on the bus to malaysia)
d) there'll be a chance for us to shop on the last day, at ipoh town, (supposedly they have nice lao po bing haha) so bring a little extra cash if you want to buy souvenirs. other than that, all meals and lodging are provided except the last day's dinner. s$50 should be more than enough.
e) check for passport validity (at least 6 mths) and that your passport photo still looks like you! f) there'll be reception where we're going, so yup! bring your handphones.
IMPT: bring all personal medication, the 2 indemnity forms and your passport!
